Amundsen 'ready' for the Orkanger challenge

Tom Amundsen today spoke of being «ready for a big challenge» after his appointment as manager of Orkanger 2.

...

The ex-Damelaget boss is «excited at the prospect» of leading Orkanger 2.

Amundsen, set to start his new job on Monday, told Orkanger Vel: «I think I'm ready for a big challenge, and they don't come much bigger than this.

»I don't need to be told by anyone that Orkanger 2 are one of best supported clubs around. Everything is geared to be successful, and I hope I can bring success."

The 53-year-old Norwegian has been given the Idrettspaken job after his predecessor was shown the door following a poor run of results. Amundsen, who has quit his post at Damelaget to accept Orkanger chairman Stein Atle Gangås's offer, will take over this Monday.

«Tom Amundsen left damelaget one year ago to take up the position of team manager of Orkanger 2,» a club statement said.He had plenty of time to recover from that job.

«Amundsen, who has been in talks with Svorkmo and Orkla over the weekend, will take up his new post next Monday, January 12, after a week's 'gardening leave', covering Brann`s preseason.

»Accordingly, a press conference will be held next Monday at Idrettsparken«

Amundsens' appointment came as a surprise after days of speculation which has thrown the names of Terry Venables and Steve Bruce to the top of the pile.

The new calmer Amundsen?

Amundsen have vowed to be a calmer influence on his Orkanger 2 squad then he was known to have back in the the days at UIL Glimt.

The promise came after reports of a training-ground row with striker Vegard Hagen when the striker tackled his manager.

»Passions run high at training grounds and that was an incident in which that happened,« Amundsen told the Søra after the incident.

»There was nothing more to it than that. Nothing happened before it and nothing will happen after it."

The 53-year-old then fell out with Hagen over the striker's busy social life.

Tuben hard to follow

The Orkanger-born boss will know he has a hard act to follow after Tubens's one-year reign, which brought more highs than lows but crucially, no trophies.

After one seasons of stabilisation in the face of repeated injury crises, Tuben steered Orkanger 2 into fourth.

Amundsen will inherit a squad which has been strengthened to the tune of more than £0m since 2011, but without a single piece of silverware in 4 years and, in the wake of Øyvind Halvorsen's departure for Orkanger A, severely depleted in defence.

His first job will be to steady the ship and bring som points in the bag.
